I don’t know much about photography, but I do know that my little camera and I really shouldn’t attempt to take a picture with a window in the background (unless it’s dark outside the window). Question by mangotango21: What is a regular college with a good art program?
I am currently in high school, and I want to major in an art-related subject. I was originally looking for art schools, but as much as I love art, I don’t want my life to be set in stone, and I think going to an exclusively “art” school would do exactly that. . I would like more flexibility with job opportunities. Someone told me that in that case, I should look for a regular college with a good art program.

Could you give me a list of good regular colleges (not art schools) with good undergraduate art programs?

Thanks :)

Answer by RoaringMice
You’ve made a good choice. Like you, I decided to study art at a broad university, rather than at an art school, because I knew that going to art school would “set my life in stone”, as you said. So I know quite a few strong universities that have excellent art programs. Look at the following schools:
- Smith College (if you’re female :grins:)
- Carnegie Mellon
- Syracuse University
- Rochester Institute of Technology
- Alfred University (but only if you plan to do ceramics)
- Brown University (because of its relationship with RISD)
- Tufts University (because of its relationship with the Museum School)
- Boston University
- Brandeis University
- Bard College
- Pratt Institute (great art school with a limited number of other majors, so maybe not a great fit)
- Parsons (fabulous art school, and part of the New School. The New School isn’t the strongest university, though. It’s good, but it’s not BU, if you get my meaning.)
- UCLA
- Temple
- Drexel (a bit of a step down from the above, but it’s good)
- University of Michigan Ann Arbor

With the schools I mentioned that have “relationships with” art schools, you can actually do a dual degree, if you’d like: a BFA at, for example, RISD, with a BA from Brown.

Question by Ku Ku Kachu: What’s the symbol on the pittsburg steelers helmet called?
(football)

i know it’s like “leaf” something, but i can’t remember the name!

Best answer:

Answer by Hawk M
“The Steelers logo was introduced in 1962 and is based on the “Steelmark,” originally designed by Pittsburgh’s U.S. Steel and now owned by the American Iron and Steel Institute”

“It consists of the word “Steelers” surrounded by three astroids (hypocycloids of four cusps). The original meanings behind the astroids were, “Steel lightens your work, brightens your leisure, and widens your world.” Later, the colors came to represent the ingredients used in the steel-making process: yellow for coal, red for iron ore, and blue for scrap steel. While the formal Steelmark logo contains only the word “Steel,” the team was given permission to add “ers” in 1963 after a petition to AISI.”

The Steelers are the only NFL team that puts its logo on only one side of the helmet (the right side). Longtime field and equipment manager Jack Hart was instructed to do this by Art Rooney as a test to see how the logo appeared on the gold helmets; however, its popularity led the team to leave it that way permanently

Question by allison: What would the perfect art school admissions portfolio comprise of?
I’m just looking for suggestions for different types of pieces to include in a portfolio for admissions to an art college. What did you have in yours? Did any specific pieces provoke the attention of admissions in your interview? What do you think they liked best?

Just tell me your story! :)

and if it makes a difference I am applying to transfer to the Cleveland Institute of Art for next fall. Currently though I am attending a community college.

Best answer:

Answer by papersky06
Lots and lots of still lives.
Drawing from real life, and not a photograph.
Sketches, journals, unfinished doodles.
Pieces that pertain to the major you’re going into.
Anything you’ve created in community college and/or on your own – if they’re too big to bring along, take good pictures of them from all angles.

I have lots of visual journals, stenciled pieces, gesture drawings, fashion sketches…I never presented my portfolio because my plans changed rather quickly (I’m at a community college too), but I’ve gotten feedback from a few teachers/profs. Anything you’ve made, whether you like it or not, will give you a good start.

Good luck!

Question by lauren: Where is a good college to major in photography?
I’m pretty sure I want to major in photography and minor in art. I’m not interested in the “Art Institute” college chains. I live near Houston so I was looking into Texas State and Texas Tech but, what colleges/universities have good photography programs?

Best answer:

Answer by Rustic B
Photography is not a degree offered by universities. Try a tech school or community college.
