Question by marshmeryll: What tools do you need when drawing manga?
What do anime artists use when drawing their manga (whether digitally or by using pen and paper).
What are those inking tools do they use? And what are the best brands you could recommend?

And also, do they still use pen and paper or did they start drawing manga using the computer?

Most Mangaka have started using computers. professionals recommend Manga Studio EX, but for beginners Manga Studio Debut should be fine. It’s basically like photoshop only specifically for creating Manga. You can have multiple layers, for example a layer of what you’ve sketched, a layer of skin tone, shadows, darker shadows, hair, highlights on the hair. It’s very detailed. Also it allows you to break up the page anyway you want. There’s a huge number of toning tools on the program you can use, cross hatching effects, shadows, also common backgrounds and designs. Instead of Manga Studio some use TOKYOPOP’s Manga Creator, but if you read reviews Manga Studio crashes less.

With the program it’s easiest to get a pen tablet, that allows you to draw with a “pen” onto a digital board and directly into the program. Wacom and Genius are two brand names. This tool allows you to hand draw your artwork and also have it immediately on the computer.

Some Mangaka still do use the original drawing and toning techniques, but they are time consuming and expensive, so it’s mostly been phased out.
