Question by Ding W: Is there any art college which is suitable for students who want to study Visual Effects?
Is there any art college suitable for students who want to study Visual Effects? I think the SCAD’s courses are really good. But is there any other colleges similar or better? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Tj D
Aside from SCAD a few more top-notch Visual Effects schools are the Vancouver School of Visual Effects, and Gnomon School of Visual Effects

A few of the “Art Institutes” have Visual Effects Majors also, but they are very expensive and not really worth the price. You have to work really hard to compete with students from the larger Visual Effects schools. From what I hear, the Art Institute in Denver, CO has the best A.I. Visual Effects department in the country, Best equipment, very large green-screen, etc.

Every now and again, my library takes a field trip somewhere in the city. This time, we got an architectural tour of the IIT Campus.

Question by Lydia: Does the culinary program at the Art Institute restrict hair dying?
I currently attend Johnson and Wales and there is a policy against unnatural hair color. I am transferring to the art institute this fall. Before I dye my hair purple, I want to make sure it is permissible.

Best answer:

Answer by jannsody
Please *avoid* those private For-profit schools such as the “art institute”. Their course credits usually do NOT transfer to other schools, even if the for-profit school is regionally accredited (as opposed to only nationally accredited).

This consumer site has a lot of negative posts by former students of those for-profit schools (including the “art institute”), and please heed the students’ warnings: and can search.

Please instead consider the more affordable (and usually more reputable) community college or even the county vo-tech school as long as the program is accredited within the industry.

For U.S. colleges (including community colleges): http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

If you call one of the local community colleges or county vo-tech schools that offer culinary, perhaps you can ask them about their policy of proper attire, including hair dye. If they do not permit the unnatural hair color, perhaps you can color your hair that way during the summer (or other time when planning to have time off from school).

Question by royluxomburg: Is the group of schools known as “The Art Institutes” any good?
I’ve been looking at “The Art Institute of Indianapolis”. They have schools all over the country, but I can’t tell if they are actually a good school or if they’re a joke in the art world.

Best answer:

Answer by cre8ive1
I looked into them myself. I am a non-traditional student, in other words older! :) , and was looking at different options to be “quick” and use my time wisely, but I discovered that the best way would be to go the traditional route and get a good education even though it takes a few years.

I am a graphic arts major, not exactly fine arts, but similar. I do not think the Art Institute is a joke in the art world, but I just think you would get a better education and better experience from a traditional college. I do know my art teachers who have been in the art world for many years have said that getting your BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) goes a lot farther than getting a “quickie” BA or BS degree.

Something you could do would be to call local places where you would like to work and outright ask them if they would hire someone who had graduated from the Art Institute. I think it comes down to your skill and how confident you are in yourself when you go to get a job. Whether you get that skill at the Art Institute is something I can’t answer definitively, but I hope I gave you something to think about. :) Good luck! I am 41 by the way and if I can do it, you can do it!! I just graduated from community college with an AA in Art and am transferring to a four-year college for my BFA. Go for it and have fun, you only live once.

Question by owizeisme: Who feels they should come out with a Sega Saturn or Dreamcast Collection?
The have all these Sonic Sega Collection games, and company treasures (midway, namco, konami, capcom, etc) collections. Who thinks its time to step it up and bring out some real collections from the Sega Saturn, PS1, and Dreamcast days. Im not talking about emulators Im talking about an actual collection of games on a disc for the 360 or PS3.

Question by Emily Mikari: How do you make a plushie?
Like Sonic fan characters, anime, etc. I have been wanting to make plushies and sell them online to make money to buy things for me, but I have no clue on where to start. Does anyone know tutorials, the items required, and how to make them? I wanted to make these for a long time, so I would really appreciate it if someone can help me. :)

Best answer:

Answer by G
You’ll want to start with something simple and work your way up to something more complex. Here are some free patterns to get your started:

You’ll want to use a soft fabric. Anything soft fabric will work (like I use fake fur, felt, or terry cloth), and you can use a lot of different types of stuffing. You can buy fiberfill or pillow stuffing, but you can even use stuff like yarn (but be careful, since your plushie will be floppy but very soft).

Once you understand the basics of making plushies, you can start drafting your own patterns. For the Sonic character ones, you’ll need fabric paint as well.
