The ‘lock-on’ cart! Technically this is Sonic the Hedgehog 4, but Sega was making a big push to get Knuckles popular. This was the game that had a pass-through slot on top so that you could plug in Sonic 2 or 3 and then be able to play as Knuckles in the older games. It was pretty amazing back then; and still is today.

From Wikipedia:
"The lock-on technology was actually a way of making up for the fact that the developers could not meet the deadline for Sonic 3. Originally, Sonic 3 was to be released with Knuckles as a playable character, and with all the Sonic & Knuckles levels playable (the level select screen in Sonic 3 features inaccessible Sonic & Knuckles levels and music for said levels can be played in the sound test). Time constraints forced them to split the project in two, releasing Sonic 3 with the completed levels and continuing work on the uncompleted ones, plus adding the Super Emeralds, and the lock-on gimmick. Indeed Sonic 2 had once run into similar problems, resulting in the original Hidden Palace and several other levels being removed."

Question by gamedezyner: Is it illegal to use the characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog games if credit is given?
I want to make a fan-fiction game using Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends. Is it legal to produce and release this under a freeware license if I state that the characters used belong to Sonic Team and Sega?
I will be creating my own models and images of these characters. I am asking about the legality of using the actual “characters”, meaning their personalities and physical traits.

Possibly, but most likely not. The characters are registered trademarks, meaning you can’t really use them at all for your own work.

You could always contact the trademark owner and discuss this with them. They may allow it, they may demand a licensing fee for use, or they may just say no. You won’t know unless you ask them.
