Question by : how much money would you make as a wedding photographer?
and how much “schooling” would you have to go through?

Many photographers don’t earn their primary living from it- there are lots of expenses; especially with digital, where you have to replace your cameras every few years. Studio space, make-up artists, lighting and other equipment, software etc. Don’t forget that models don’t generally work for free, so until you’re established and have clients, you’ll be spending money to build your portfolio. Even on TFCD shoots, you’ll have expenses.

For each lucky papparazzi that sold a photo to some celebrity magazine for $ 50k, there are literally thousands who made nothing, but spent the same amount of time camped out and driving around following celebs, looking for that one shot of Britney or Angelina’s new baby.

Sure there’s money in weddings, but it’s a tough business.

If you cannot get a scholarship to a college that teaches photography, you may want to work as an assistant to a professional photographer … you will have to have some skills as a photographer though. Most of your job will include doing most of the “grunt” work for the photographer both in the studio and on location.

During this time, you can start to build your camera system and what that consists of, will have much to do with the expertise you gain while learning and working with the pro.

This internship/apprenticeship can take five years or longer before you will be able to go out on your own, because you will not just be learning how to set up shots, use cameras and working with models and clients, but the art of doing business on a day to day basis, including looking for new clients, packaging image files requested by clients or agencies, making invoices, maintaining equipment and maintaining the image libraries.
